Samuel Tak Lee Visits His Eponymous Building and Lab

On Monday, September 12, 2016, MIT alumnus Sameul Tak Lee visited the recently reopened Samuel Tak Lee Building 9 (STL9) to see the renovated facility and meet with fellows, staff and faculty of the Samuel Tak Lee MIT Real Estate Entrepreneurship Lab.

After meeting with MIT President L. Rafael Reif, Mr. Lee joined Eran Ben-Joseph, head of the Department of Urban Studies and Planning, to tour STL9. Mr. Lee and Dr. Ben-Joseph then met with STL Lab staff and fellows in the STL Innovation Hub for brief presentations by Rik Eberhardt from the MIT Game Lab; Dr. Albert Saiz, director of the MIT Center for Real Estate; and Zhengzhen Tan, assistant director of the STL Lab. Eberhardt presented to the group the development and testing of the STL Lab’s educational real estate entrepreneurship game named LivableCity; second-year STL Fellow and Master of City Planning candidate Jintai Li demonstrated the tablet-based game for Mr. Lee. Dr. Saiz gave Mr. Lee a tour of the multimedia and interactive MIT Case Study, currently under development. Tan introduced Mr. Lee to the two massive online open courses (MOOCs) in development in the STL Lab, STLx.161 and STLx.162, taught by STL Lab director Dr. Yu-Hung Hong and Prof. Larry Susskind, respectively. Mr. Lee stressed the importance of using LivableCity and the finished case studies as supplements to the STLx MOOCs, reminding the group of his wish for all content to be globally accessible. Following these presentations, Mr. Lee spoke to students about his real estate ventures around the world.

Mr. Lee ended his visit to STL9 with a meeting and group photo with current STL Fellows, all of whom have received support, thanks to Mr. Lee’s generous donation to MIT.
