Dr. Zhao Yanjing graduated from Chongqing University and obtained his doctorate from the Planning and Geography School at Cardiff University, United Kingdom. Zhao has extensive experience in urban planning and management issues in Chinese cities as he has both served as a chief planner for China Academy of Urban Planning and Design as well as the planning bureau director of one of China’s most livable and attractive cities, Xiamen.

Currently, China is seeking new driving forces for better development. Urban renewal has a pressing mission to not only support better quality of rapid ongoing urbanization, but also to transform the existing values of urban development. This lecture will introduce policy changes as well as some cases of urban renewal in the city of Guangzhou to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing development strategies in China. Consideration of the challenges includes various decision-making process, profit reconfigurationand the contested paradigm of what constitutes ideal development. Alternatively, the growing demands for high quality urbanization and changes in social behaviors indicate some opportunities for China’s urban renewal.

The purpose of this session is to introduce prospective MIT researchers to the specificity of our Faculty Seed Fund and targeted research areas.  We would also like to take this opportunity to facilitate potential new collaborations on related research topics across the institution, particularly collaborations across disciplines.

Speaker: WU Weiping 吴维平
Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning, Tufts University

Weiping Wu is a professor and chair of the Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning at Tufts University. She holds a Ph.D. in Urban Planning and Policy Development from Rutgers University, and a Master’s degree in Urban Planning and a bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Tsinghua University (China). She is a former editor of the Journal of Planning Education and Research, and a visiting Zijiang Chair Professor at East China Normal University in Shanghai. At Tufts, she also is a senior fellow in the Council for Emerging Market Enterprises at The Fletcher School, and the coordinator of the undergraduate Minor in Urban Studies program. Previously, she was a professor of urban studies and planning and international studies at Virginia Commonwealth University, a consultant to the World Bank, and a fellow in the Public Intellectuals Program of the National Committee on United States-China Relations. She also serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Urban Affairs, Open Urban Studies Journal, Journal of Urban and Regional Planning (Chinese), and World Regional Studies (Chinese).

Department of Landscape Architecture, Tongji University

Weizhen Chen is a professor of Department of Landscape Architecture in the College of Architecture and Urban Planing at Tongji University.  She is qualified to advise PhD candidates at Tongji University.  Dr. Chen is on the Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development for the Ministry of Science and Technology, as well as the Committee of Experts on Green Buildings for the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.
